HOLY WEEK BASKET
Add a piece of fruit to your Holy Week basket.
SCRIPTURE
Read Mark 11:12-19.
DEVOTION
Most of us know well what happened during Holy Week on Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. What about the other days?
On Monday, Jesus entered Jerusalem (from where he was staying in nearby Bethany) and drove out the money changers from the temple. The same day he cursed a fig tree for bearing no fruit. Mark intertwines these two stories in Mark 11:12-26.
The common thread was fruitlessness. The cursing of the fig tree was not about punishing a plant for not bearing fruit out of season. It was an acted parable about people going through the motions of religion without bearing the fruit of changed hearts, of compassion and justice, of heartfelt worship, of seeking Christ and his kingdom, of sharing our faith with others.
If Jesus came to your home or workplace on this Monday of Holy Week, would he find your faith fruitful or fruitless?
PRAYER
Lord, let this Holy Week change my priorities to focus more on the things that matter the most to you. Amen.
