It’s time to give thanks.  We usually give thanks for freedom, family, home – the usual “blessings.”  And well we should.  These are gifts from a gracious God.

If it seems like your thanksgiving is a little mundane, however – sort of a rote repetition of the same themes, maybe you need some new blessings on your list.

Here are ten reasons to give thanks you may not have thought of –

·         Critics – they keep you humble.

·         Busyness – it prevents boredom.

·         Confusion – it prompts you to ask for help.

·         Unanswered prayers – they teach you that Father knows best.

·         Conflict – when rightly used, it can result in clarity and energy.

·         Anger – it stirs us to action.

·         Sickness – it slows us down and helps us let go of our “Messiah complex.”

·         Getting older – it is a better alternative than living indefinitely with immaturity.

·         Death – it is our transition to eternal life.

·         Unmet needs – they remind us that our greatest need is God.

Paul (Romans 5:3-5) and James (1:2-3) both tell us that our trials produce perseverance, character, faith, and hope.  We don’t like them, but they are tools God uses to grow us up on earth, release our hold on this earth, and make us long for heaven.
